ラカンはObjet αを「欲望の原因」であると説明し、その代表格として、乳房、排泄物、まなざし、声の４つを上げる。乳児は、母親の乳房が乳児の望むものすべてを、すなわち無限の母乳と愛情を持っていると感じる。乳房は無限のものを持っており、無限である以上、乳児に有限を分け与えてもそれは減らない。この減ることのない無限性を、乳児は欲しがる。しかしその無限性こそ、乳房が乳児に与えてくれない当のものだ。ひとがアプリオリに人肌を求め、あるいは善行を為し、あるいは詩、音楽、絵画、映像などの芸術作品をこよなく愛するのは、その先に対象 α / 欲望の原因を見るからだろう。【リリースノート】
タイトルのObjet α（オブジェ・アー）は、ジャック・ラカンの精神分析理論で用いられる概念の一つで、日本語では対象α、小文字の他者と訳される。ラカンはレクチャーのなかでこのような言葉を残している。”私から見たあなたが、全体から見た私と等式で結ばれる時、対象aは黄金数として現れる”。

また彼は、このことをシンプルな数式によって表す。

自分を x、他人を y とする。他人に映った自分（対象a）を a＝x／(x＋y) とする。決して到達することの出来ない a を自分が見た他人として類推すると、 a＝x／(x＋y)＝y／x ということになる。この式の解は a＝(√5－1)／2 となる。つまり黄金数である。

方程式を利用して考えられることは、私が他者を見る視点が、我々が私を見る視点に等しくなるということ、すなわち、個別と普遍の一致であるといえる。これ

つまり、先の言葉を言い換えると、以下のようになる。はもはや、精神分析理論の概念であるというよりも、イブン・アラビーの「存在一性論」、ウパニシャッド、老荘思想、華厳経、禅、またあるいは一神教を準備した数々の思想に通底する、神秘主義の響きさえ感じられる。
